A good way to save some money on venues is to rent a place from your local city. I looked at Oakvilles website and they do offer facility rentals for community centres and parks. http://www.oakville.ca/facilityrentals.h…
You may also want to check out the other cities to see if they offer any rentals. Usually if you are a resident of that city you will receive a discount on the facility.
Here are some other city websites that you might want to look into. You can also try places like Elk Lodges, Womens Clubs, Rotary Clubs, etc. They often have spaces available for rent as well. http://cms.burlington.ca/Page41.aspxhttp://www.myhamilton.ca/myhamilton/City…http://www.toronto.ca/culture/museums/fa…http://www.mississauga.ca/portal/residen…
Hope this helps! Good luck. :)

My fiance and I live in Hamilton, when we were looking at venues we came upon a place called the "Iron Staircase". It's a cafe that you can rent out for functions like weddings, pretty unique and affordable. We didn't book there because we have too many guests, but we both loved the place. If you google it there are lots of pictures of it.
You can also try all-in-one package places for some great deals. I know just in Hamilton there is Carmen's, Marquee Gardens, Renaissance. ou basically pay one price per person for everything (including decor and open bar) and it's very affordable. You don't get as much selection, but you do save a lot of money that way.
Good Luck!
