Hello. I am getting married on October 15, 2011. A family friend wants to know when I want to go shop for a wedding dress? When should I start to look for a wedding dress?

You have awhile I’m not getting married until Feb 2011 and I won’t start looking for another year from now… about 8 months before you should be doing the online browsing thing… 6 months going out and shopping and trying on dresses… and about 4 months before buying your dress and having it hemmed, ect if needed
Now if you are customizing your own dress you want to look for a designer now… start getting ideas now, and have them start working on it in about 6 months and have it done 6 months before the wedding so if anything needs to be fixed they can do so.

You can start looking now to get an idea of what you like and what you don’t like. Don’t make a descision until the year before your wedding. Its always best to get it a year in advance. I got mine in march of this year and my dress won’t be ready until 8 weeks before the wedding which is in june 2010 and that doesn’t include alterations. But as soon as you find the dress of your dreams stop looking. Good luck and congrats. Here are some websites to checkout if you’d like.http://www.eveofmiladybridals.comhttp://www.maggiesottero.comhttp://www.pninatornai.comhttp://www.priscillaofboston.comhttp://www.pronovias.comhttp://www.demetriosbride.comhttp://www.edenbridals.comhttp://www.jlmcouture.comhttp://www.privatelabelbyg.comhttp://www.enzoani.com

I would suggest starting your search now, but only online. You could create a folder on your desktop and name it wedding dress. Then go to google click images (at the top left corner of your screen) and start your search there. Its a good way to see alot of photos without having to go to an individual site. Save all of the photos you like to that folder. But remember to save it under the name of the website, that way you know where you found it.
This will allow you to later on look at all the styles that caught your eye. In about 6 mnths you can see if you still like those styles. Then narrow down your list even more.
I ordered my dress a year before, I would recommend doing the same. The more time you give yourself the better.
Oh, and what I did was give the dress retailer the wrong wedding date. I told her it was a MONTH before. Thankkkkkkkkkkkkkkk GGGGGGGoooodd I did that. She didn’t have my bridesmaids dresses ready till the week before my actual wedding date. So she was 3 weeks late from the “wedding date”. I had called her the week before the “wedding date” and asked her why she hadnt called still and were where the dresses and she had to admit they weren’t there but still was trying to bulls**t us. We then told her that we had given her that date as cushion just in-case she didn’t fulfill her end of the purchase …..and gave her the real date of the wedding.
So I definitely recommend giving a false wedding date. You don’t want a vendor messing up your wedding so get your things ahead of time and hold it in a safe place.

Generally, if you are ordering a gown, you should allow 6 months for it to be made and shipped to you and another 6 weeks for the alterations process.
You’ll want to make sure you have the dress with enough time to take bridal portraits, if you plan to do those.
If buying a gown from someplace like David’s Bridal, you can take it home that day so it doesn’t really matter how far in advance you purchase.

usually 6-8months before the wedding because they take a while to make so then you have plenty of time to pay it off and get alterations when it comes in
if you want to buy one off the rack probably 1-2months in advance so you only leave time for alterations and to find a dress you actually like

You should start looking now ’cause time fly by quick and when you wait you might not get a dress you like/love because it was early. Find a dress you like and not what your parents/mother-in-law would ’cause this is your wedding not theirs.but remember try to make the dress fit your body and not the other way around. Good Luck hunting!!!

you will need to order a dress 3 – 6 months before you need it.. plus give time for alterations… but i say start shopping now… you don’t have to buy now… just start shopping… we have been waiting to do this for a long time!! go shop and enjoy yourself… one piece of advice… when you purchase a dress, do not dress shop or brows or pay any attention to wedding dresses… second guessing yourself will drive you crazy…

i think you should give yourself at least 6 months. it takes time to find the perfect dress and then you have to have it altered.
