Have Wedding Gown Designers Been On Vacation For The Last Few Years? Why Do All Wedding Gowns Look The Same?

Don’t some brides want something original or unique for their wedding day? Not all women want to bare their shoulders, do they? Are sleeves bad luck now or something?

Um, where’s the ‘pick-up’ skirt? ..lol.
I find it so amusing that many of these gals cry for something different and unique so their wedding stands out…sometimes going way overboard with themes and costs…citing that they don’t want a ‘cookie cutter’ wedding (understandable) and then they go for the ‘fad dress of the season’…..a strapless/sleeveless creation, often with a pick-up skirt…and a tiara…..all dresses a dif variation of the same thing.
The faces are dif….the wedding dresses seem all the same. As beautiful as many of them are, they all look basically the same.
Ditto on bridal colors…black with a color, usually red or pink…chocolate brown & blue…….everybody’s doing those color combinations….so what’s so unique?
And if it’s not gebera daisies it’s calla lillies…sometimes both.
I married for the first time in 1974…the amount of styles available at any price range was staggering…..now, it’s all strapless/sleeveless, most with pick-up skirts, which is a style that flatters few gals…
..and the majority are on the white gold band wagon……I can’t beleive everybody actually prefers white gold..it’s def more of a ‘white gold in, yellow out’…wait…in a few years it’ll reverse itself and all those with white gold will be outdated.
However, what you truely prefer never goes out of style because it’s what you really want..not what someone else dictates you ’should have’ according to trends/fashions…….
Xanthe: Wow THAT’s the kinda dress I like to see! truely beautiful AND different……and you do look perfect in it.

(Xanthe, your dress is lovely. If someone said tiers of flounces, I would have cringed, but it’s a lovely soft feminine dress and you look gorgeous!)
Oh, I totally agree with you. I just don’t know why so many brides are like lemmings and seem to buy that one style ‘because they are there’. There are still so many options out there, one must just look.
I was lucky, I wanted a traditional gown with sleeves, and was able to find one which was THE one in a small boutique.
I know from doing lots of searches to help others, there ARE gowns with all different lengths of sleeves, and styles – it just takes a bit of effort.
I don’t know why women think strapless is ’special’ at all – to me it looks unfinished, somehow….
… and there’s nothing funnier than being at a wedding, and through the ceremony and reception, both bride and bridesmaids are continually hiking up their bodices, lol… it at least gives us guests something to watch…
Now we need to work on ridding the world of pickup skirts and white gold rings….

You are right! It took me forever to find a dress that didn;t klook like evrybody elses. A line dresses and pick up styles are perhaps, the most common dresses. It’s sad, the put a bow pr a flower on the side, and voila! Spring collection 09!!! but it’s the same tired dress.
I’ve been watching a lot of the who’s wedding is it anyway and the bridezillas recently, and when I see these gals on 5k dresses and up, i cannot help but thiking: they look exactly the same as the $300 dresses in Davids Bridal.
    Good luck
Ps/ I like that dress and is not that common.

Designers make what is going to sell. They want to make money…. and right now everyone and there mama want a strapless gown regardless of the season. You can still find some with sleeves though. You just need to go to the bridal boutiques and look. A designer might have the option but they would not waste the money on advertising it since it is not a popular design.

It’s just the style of dresses today. Styles and trends change and what you see is just what is ‘in’ these days. I love dresses these days, they are so totally gorgeous. Dresses are unique and women who don’t want to bare their shoulders don’t. Trust me, there are still plenty of other options if you don’t like strapless. I don’t see what is wrong with them anyway but each to their own. Dresses used to be ugly. I prefer dresses today by far.

Yeah, whatever happened to wearing something that was flattering and elegant? Some of these dresses look like the weird outfits my old Barbie’s used to come in.
Not to mention it seems like there is no dress out there made for a woman bigger than a size 2 that looks halfway decent. I’ve found maybe 5 or 6 in my size that I think would look good, but seriously, when did the average size of a woman go from a 14 to a 2?
And sleeveless dresses don’t look good on anyone hardly. They bunch up your skin and make it look like you have two sets of boobs.
Just a little note and I think some of the women on here will agree with me on this one: Will someone please throw those bridal models some biscuits? They have waists that look like Barbie too!!

I don’t think the point of what you are saying is that two girls can’t wear the same dress…. I believe you are saying what I have always said – which is that all the ‘different’ dresses (no matter how much they cost) look the same! I never understood why so many girls want strapless dresses – especially when they don’t even look that good on half the girls who wear them. It annoys me how much the ‘fashion’ of the times dictates what people are allowed to wear. Why not just wear what suits you? This is my dress and I love it because it is so unique… I certainly haven’t seen anyone else in a dress like it! http://www.flickr.com/photos/25906286@N0…

Sweetie it is your special day and you deserve to have the dress of your dreams.
Why don’t you design it yourself, find a seamstress and have it made to your shape and size. Not everyone can wear some of these modern designs, so design your own.
At least you will know that it will be an original(made especialy for you)

I agree, my son just got married last Saturday. His fiance looked for a dress it seemed forever….her father had told her expense was no problem buy what she wanted, she still had problems, she finally found a dress in a Vintage shop in New York, it was beautiful, and very different in what you see in the mags now, good luck, the right dress will find you…..

most weddings now a days and determined by how much you can spend it’s not a contest. i bought the same dress that my ex co-worker wore but it doesn’t bug me because i look amazing in the dress and so did she. Pick something you like it does not matter what it looks like

yeah I’m soooo over the strapless thing. They all look the same to me. My dress had spaghetti straps and came with a little lace bolero jacket, which I kept on the entire time.
I just have a thing about strapless, cleavage-baring tube dresses in a church. But you know what they say “it’s your day wear what you want bla bla bla bla”

I’ve often wondered the same thing. I know I wouldn’t look good in that sleeveless dress – I’d add a thin drop shoulder sleeve to make it unique, or a cuff that goes straight across to the arms. (not good w/ fashion terms)

You are so right. I know something was bugging me when looking at dresses and now I finally know what it is. They are all the same!
