How To Get Dirt, Sweat Marks Off Wedding Dress?
Hi,
I’ve got a white “wedding” dress. It’s stored away at the moment so I can’t say what the material is but it’s made from the same sort of material as the formal/prom dresses are made from. It has dirt marks around the bottom of it (don’t ask how it got like that) and sweat marks on it. How to get it off without harming the dress? And once its clean how do i store it to keep it from deteriorating with age?

Gee, it sounds like that honeymoon was REALLY FUN !!! Try using an oxiginating stain lifter ( oxy clean or clorox oxy boost for example) Soak the stains for an hour or so then launder as usual. If the stains are still there when the wash is over DO NOT DRY the clothing as that will set in the stain.
For long term storage, try using a “space bag” where the air is sucked out and the bag sealed. This is a great way of preserving fabric as it protects from almost all harmful elements. Be sure to store the dress out of direct sunlight as the clear bags will NOT prevent sun damage to the fabric.
A good dry cleaner will clean the dress and prepare it for preservation. Generally, they will fold it and wrap it in acid free material then seal it in a storage box. It runs somewhere around $150 and $200, but it is well worth it.
Make sure they are certified wedding gown specialists.
I would just take it to a dry cleaner–that’s the safest way. You could get a home dry cleaning kit and just be very careful. The dry cleaner can also “preserve” it for you. You can wrap it in acid free tissue and store it in an air tight container. Cedar is good. It will keep bugs away and it also won’t get a musty smell.
I would call a person who preservates dresses and see what they recommend. They might say to take it to a dry cleaner first, or they will clean it and then preserve it for you.
